An interesting comparison between xDrive and RWD.

Good test. Pretty much lines up with expectations we have been talking about for a while I think

Headline: AWD provides faster launches, lower weight better for rolling acceleration and braking (barely)

...But a good test overall. Would have been interesting to throw a Base/6MT in the mix as well for comparison.

The video I've been waiting for a while. A little surprised by the results, I thought the AWD would have a much larger gap, but the RWD managed to keep up. Roll race I expected the RWD version to win due to drive train loss. Overall not bad, good race.

That'll have to be done somewhere other than England since they don't get the 6MT. Hopefully someone in Germany or the US will gather all three cars together.

Fun video to start the day with. Hopefully we'll see more AWD/RWD comparisons soon (though their Mat's results were about what we were all expecting, I think).

Will be interesting to see which one performs better on the race track, the added 50kg vs acceleration will come into question!

Cliff's Notes:
1/4 mile xDrive 11.3 vs 11.6 RWD
Roll race RWD passes very slowly at 120+
Braking RWD a couple feet shorter stop.

Physics remains physics.

Stock vs Stock this is pretty much what everyone was expecting.
One you start tuning these cars, the traction will be a much bigger issue. The S58 is going to have huge power increases from aftermarket support and they won't be able to grab any traction in RWD form (from a dig).
BMW damn near perfected the traction management for launching the RWD with its stock power.

Yes it would. Does the AWD make up for the weight, in the corners? Like this video, closer than we think?

I would have thought the drivetrain losses for the AWD would have been more pronounced. The RWD didn't overtake the AWD until about 140 mph.

The next test needed is a timed lap between the two using the same type of tires.

As an owner of both... this is a good, pre meditated indication of what would happen.

The RWD car is great!

I just wanted red over blue 😀

With physics being physics, the advantage of M3 AWD with proper snow tires is equally appealing for drivers in winter climates.

Both cars are superbly engineered.

What I'd love is to see my old model (F82 comp) against AWD in the wet. In Scotland that's a real world comparison and ultimately why I've ordered a G82 AWD, I had enough of lighting the tyres up and going nowhere in the old car (my second F82)
Will probably miss the edginess of if along with DCT tbh but will settle for performance gains in real world conditions.

Not surprised at the results.

I’m a little surprised he didn’t put the xDrive version in RWD mode as well, to see what difference if any that makes.

To be fair, it was steadily pulling on the AWD. I wouldn't say the difference is negligible, but the advantage to the RWD from a roll is minimal.

Surprised how close they were after the RWD had some heat in the tires but in the real world most launches gonna be like the first race (at 3:00 mark). Weight difference is negligible and it's only after 140mph RWD car starts to catch it. If I had to pick one then I'd rather be faster any speeds below 140MPH even if I lived near derestricted sections of the Autobahn.

It really shined a light on how unnecessary the CCB's are for every day stopping power.

This was the biggest thing. Zero real world benefit. Unless you are content paying $8k for less dust. Then by all means have at it.
