They need an excuse to justify their decision to discontinue them. Cost cutting is effectively their primary reason.

You can't think of any other features that were watered down these past few years? All the buttons they've removed, "Redesigned" interior lighting, etc.
Other models have suffered as well: https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2059582

^^^ Oh, you mean the extra hp that was already there since 2021, but capped off via software? 🤣 Yeah, I love it when a company gives you more of what you already had and gaslights you into thinking they did something special for you and charges for it. This is exactly why general consumers are letting the economy run rampant and unchecked and companies are getting away with charging more for less now.

TLDR
BMW is phasing out its laser headlight technology, which once promised superior range and efficiency compared to LED systems. Despite being a highlight in the luxury segment and featured on models like the BMW X7 and Audi Q8, the technology struggled due to U.S. regulations limiting headlight power. BMW and Audi's fierce race to introduce laser lights has now ended, with both companies shifting focus to improving LED Matrix systems instead. Laser lights, while innovative, are likely to disappear from future production models. |

Does that article really make any sense to you guys?? US made up for 15.6% of total BMW sales in 2023, if a feature is regulated in the US, they still have the whole 84.4% from ROW to play with??
Besides, they've done plenty of stuffs specifically for a market before... Manual M5s for US only. Not making touring available in US. Front fender charging port in i4 for China/Japan etc. etc... Laser can surely survive without US if not for another reason? Financial wise, it's one of the more popular options in the series that have the laser option, and I bet for most, it would be much easier to tick the box going from LED to Laser, than from LED to Adaptive LED, so I doubt financial is the issue here either. The other theory of laser technology hitting a ceiling, while LED caught up to a point, actually seems a lot more plausible to me... |

For what it's worth, I don't find the laser lights to be any brighter (located in Canada, maybe they're decoded here as well?) than other cars with adaptive LEDs. The laser lights do have a much nicer DRL design than the LCI imho, but apparently replacing the lasers costs an arm and a leg and I'm not entirely sure that it's worth the price premium.

If you live in a City or Suburb headlight power and features are irrelevant.
The benifits only show up on non illuminated rural roads. |

If I was BMW I would do the same and limit the HP to what is competitive at that point in time and have leeway to increase it when needed to maintain a competitive edge. Sell the product initially at it's maximum potential and you have nowhere to go when the competition matches or exceeds it. This is smart business. Keep in mind the purpose of any business is to turn the greatest profit possible and not to serve you. Serving you is just a consequence of running a competitive business. The cost of a product isn't determined by the actual manufacturing costs but what the market will bear. Greater cost means fewer sales. Lower price means more sales. There is a point where price and number of sales will provide optimal profit. |
