G80 Trade-In Value to dealer

I'm considering selling my G80 M3 as it no longer fits my lifestyle anymore. Given that a BMW dealer could CPO it, would I expect to get a higher trade in value at a BMW dealer compared to somewhere else?

I'm in TX so would want to sell to a dealer to save on sales tax when buying my next car.

Perhaps comes down to the local market demand and auction prices - and your build spec

Only thing to do is take it in then take it to Carmax and a few competitive dealers in the area and see where it falls.

Used car market is falling so do what's best for your pocketbook and lifestyle.

Let us know what you find - would be a good data point as this is a topic being discussed in several threads.

I wouldn’t count on the BMW dealer giving you the best offer. I’d seriously consider Carvana as another option.

When i sold my G80 last fall, i reached out to ~ 15 dealers in state and out of state. Local BMW dealers offers were one of the lowest and one of them even recommended me to sell it private or try out other online dealers.

I ended up selling it to a local exotic car dealer and second best offer was from Carvana (this was before their stocks plunged).

What was the discrepancy in pricing? Only reason I ask is I save $4k in taxes (or so) if I trade in vs sell and buy a car separately.

Overall offers were spread over $9k and delta between highest BMW dealer offer & my selling price was around $6k. Also in MI, we hardly get any trade in tax incentive.

Got it, makes sense! Thanks for the info, glad you were able to maximize the sale.

Natch if you are going to trade it, you need to figure in the savings there and the slightly reduced hassle.

In my experience, selling my first G82, my local dealer offered me around 74K, I believe. I was not trading. So I did the carvana quote and (I can't recall what it was) then just put an ad out on Cargurus or cars.com or something like that, at 83K I believe, and a Texas dealer bought it for 80 or 81, who can remember? He flipped it immediately at Manheim and made $500, most of which I presume he lost in fees. It then sold at a second-tier dealer in Atlanta, asking price was in the mid/upper 80s, IIRC.

A coworker has a Manheim account, so we could track all of that nonsense.

I was happy, and hopefully the new owner is happy, although he/she could have saved $6K or more had they seen my ad and just bought the car from me.

Carvana may be going down the toilet, business-wise, but they're still buying cars at above average prices, and it's easy to get a quote from them online. Carmax will also do some quotes online now, saving a trip and two hours waiting on those folks.

Also, FYI, BMW doesn't do a lot of CPO any more on M cars. I suspect that it's too expensive.

Yep, BMW pricing here in Atlanta is total trash. There is such a demand for new and used, if you want a deal you better be prepared to travel....

I'm in a similar situation as OP. Either sell my M8 myself and buy a car separately or save $5k in MA sales tax if I trade it in to dealer for the new car.

Any idea what auction fees and any other costs associated with buying at Manheim?

Like to see how the dealer comes up with the trade-in value he gives me for the M8. Compare the cost for the dealer buying an M8 at auction vs trade-in value he gives me. Or, is it simply the lowest price the dealer thinks I will jump for?

Manheim requires you to be a licensed dealer to buy and sell, but my coworker's wife used to have a license, so he can still go in and look, but can't buy. Instead, he uses a local dealer who charges him $500 for the service of being a broker. Then you have to arrange transportation, so it can add up.

I find that most dealers look up the past sales on Manheim to determine their offer. How greedy they are from that depends on the dealer and your local market. An M8 may be a tough sale (it's an expensive car) and there aren't that many out there, so I wouldn't be surprised to see offers that are less than wholesale. It costs them money to have it in inventory.

Best of luck.

I tried CarMax, Carvana, and a dealer in Denver, and were not even in the same zipcode as my local dealership, who offered $10k over the closest offer.
