First time dropping a car, questions
All the pics look so good! I'm going to do it.
22 M4CX (don't know which tires oem), short driveway at about 5.5% angle so concerned about scraping. Do I order springs from a forum vendor? Purely street use, don't want harsher ride on my roads which are not buttery smooth (snow climate causes road breakdown/potholes/road fill), linear spring rate preferred, not looking for a big drop, just trying to minimize the M4's big gap. Wouldn't want to go any lower than this M3: https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...&postcount=107 Are wheel spacers more common than not? Want to avoid rubbing at full lock turn. What is the price range for springs and labor (know it's market dependent)? *edit read it's about 3 hour job, maybe bit more for xdrive. Any questions to ask local shop before committing? Spring choice really depends on how low you really want to go. I personally went with MSS HAS kit because i didnt want to slam it super low and they are adjustable. The other adjustable options are KW HAS and i think maybe H&R might have an adjustable kit as well. The adjustable kits run around $1000 to $1300 range from what ive seen. If you want a little cheaper route you can go non-adjustable lowering springs like AST, eibach and im sure a bunch of others. You just have to look at the spring rates and height specs as those will lower your car whatever height they sit at and cannot be adjusted at all. For install its a pretty easy process as far as lowering springs go compared to other cars. No spring compressor is needed. I usually would do it myself but my jack broke a few weeks prior to getting my springs and i didnt want to wait so my guy did them for me for $400. For spacers you can just look around but most of the vendors that you will find the springs at will most likely have options for spacers as well. Only thing to note when lowering and using spacers is that you will see some rubbing on the front wheels between your tires and the inner wheel well plastic. I have 15mm spacers on front and 12mm on rear with the MSS HAS kit and i get pretty significant rubbing on the front wheels when reversing and turning the wheel at full lock. Other than that no rubbing any other time and i plan on shaving down the plastic fins in the wheel well to prevent rubbing going forward. The rubbing does not causing any issues or damage to your car, its simply just an annoying sound to hear when reversing. As for overall ride feel, i feel absolutely no difference from stock setup with better feel on fast corners. Heres a few images of my car right after i installed the spacers and springs. I did not lower these as far as they could go in this picture and they also have not had time to settle as over time of driving the springs will soften slightly and drop a little more to their more permanent position. I plan on dropping mine as far as they go as i have the older MSS kit where the fronts really dont drop super low anyways. Hope this helps a bit and good luck |

Ive posted mine a bunch but incase you havent seen, heres my G80 on the KW has kit. I love it. It rides just like stock. Maybe a tad stiffer. Im on 15mm/12mm future classic spacers. I had a slight rub in the front when backing up with the wheel turned all the way to the right. But that will go away as I just ordered a set of wheels and Michelin 4s.

The goal initially was to level out the front and rear wheel gap as the stock front gap is absurd but it ended up still leaving more of a gap on both ends than i preferred. I read that the MSS settled quite a bit more than other springs so i didnt want to go crazy at first. Again these images are literally 20 minutes after the springs were installed so they have settled a few mm both front and rear since these photos were taken. Im lowering both as far as they can go tomorrow to so ill confirm how much thread was left and take pictures of the updates after taking all the way down. |

I use the MSS kit with BMS spacers on my car, no scraping. The car looks great in my opinion and perfectly balanced for a daily driver.

Just know that you may not have any rubbing initially but then rub in the front, in reverse, a few thousand miles later like me. G82 with 15 mm spacers front and rear. MSS original front kit dropped all the way and 10 mm left on rears. Michelins.

Just lowered front all the way...only had about 6/7mm left in front prior to taking it all the way down. Personally would like to see another 10mm to close the front gap a bit more but im beyond happy compared to stock gap. I didnt get around to lowering the rear any further today but i have every bit of 15-20mm of thread left. As much as i want to take it down all the way i think it will throw off the rake too much and probably make the front gap even bigger. So ill either just drop it down another 10mm in back or just wait to get the updated front springs from MSS so i can keep the drop more even all around. |

I just wanted to have a baseline for the rear, so I don't have to remove/reinstall the rear arms. I think the current rake is perfect. I hate the rear being lower than the front. With the updated front springs/seats, you'll be able to bring down the rear another 10mm or so. |
