G80 Depreciation

Just for sh**s and giggles. How do y’all think the g80/g82’s will fair in depreciation? Do we think this might be the last full combustion engine model before a refresh? The e92 did not do well in depreciation land but the f80 is holding up pretty decently! What do you think?

Realistically, only time will tell but I did see this article on Motor Trend a couple of weeks ago https://www.motortrend.com/features/...8-dfd5c912fa01 . It picked the 21 M3/M4 as having among the best resale values for 2021. They estimate the M4 with retain 54% after 5 years and the M3 56.5%.

the reason the F8x is holding a little better is due to the high demand of cars right now IMO. All used cars have taken an uptick. With the shortage of cars the market on new and used has gone way up. If the chip situation and other variables levels out then you will see normal demand/supply scenarios

Pretty much any mass produced car is going to be a depreciating asset as Im sure everyone agrees. Now if it is the last combustion which I doubt it will be then yea I could totally see it holding a little better that is unless gas is like 12$ a gallon lol then might be a different story.

Right now used ones are going for more than new on Autotrader so I’d say decently so far.

We all know the next generation will go some form of hybrid. With that being said the market for a true gas-only version will likely be stronger.

Shortages will always be a factor in the market, but independent of that resale value on M cars is historically not terrible.

Edit: Also advice from a sales person at a dealer is not exactly sound when there's a bias...

Like alot of M cars, you'd assume the well taken care of one's willl depreciate steadily, hit a floor and then start to appreciate. With EVs on the horizon who knows if that will continue.

Should do fine as all M3s have. If you didn’t do ok on your e92 you got taken advantage of. My e90 depreciated less than $25k over 4 years and 40k miles…as GOLFRR says the F8X has crazy trade-in now due to shortage of cars. $45k for my 2015 picked up in July 2014 WHAAT! I expected high 20s. It’s just nuts. Who da f*ck pays that dough for such an old car? Crazy.

Interesting take, I am not a sales person however, but I would also argue someone who is and family is in the business who sees the ups and downs of cars everyday for over 3 decades now could also yield some decent advice on car business how things could shake out

It can be stated that no one in their lifetime has lived through this scenario so we cannot say what the outcome will be in a few years.

No hard feelings, I simply know dealers never have customers best interest in mind.

Golffrr,

You have repeatedly proven yourself to be an exception from the rule. You and I have never really interacted, but I've seen first hand how you quickly response effortlessly to questions about these cars. The few times that you haven't known the answer you have been upfront and honest and said that you would find out.

Sadly, the car industry has the reputation it has and it takes a long long time for that to change. But please don't let that discourage you. Keep up the great work. Your reputation is solid here.

PS. I totally agree with tour assessment of the market.

thank you so much, that such a nice complement, I appreciate you.

I hold no hard feelings to anyone. I love to hear everyones input thats what makes the forums so good. I just ask that everyone is respectful and pretty much most of the time the are.Its a great community on here which is why we continue to sponsor and be part of it. Yea it helps out store also

as far as the car business goes, its tough bc we are one of the few small family owned stores these days. More and more are corporate. so they pretty much have a monopoly on things and have unlimited customers where we have a small store and we try to lead with customer service and fairness. You can't please everyone, know one can and we can't control other dealers so we try our best with our small store and let the chips fall where they do

I didn't mean to come off as rude, I simply don't trust dealerships with few exceptions from a lot of experience. There's almost never anyone on your side unless you get the token person who doesn't care about making money and is willing to help. Of course, not everyone is like that but the car business is unfortunately this way more often than not.

I 2nd GOLFFRR 's post , the current car market is an outlier for sure.

And for what it's worth, you seem like a stand up guy. Carry on

All cars depreciate unless they are made in selected numbers and are rare. Plus there needs to be a demand.

Absolutely agreed. There are so few reputable car sales associates. When you meet the right one it's a good thing.

Not necessarily. You're right they mostly depreciate but there are several examples of cars with high production numbers that have bottomed out and begun to steadily appreciate after they hit collector status.
