G8X ZF8… which do you use the the most? Drive, Paddles, Shifter?
After decades of performance cars with manuals, I am very excited to drive the M3 Competition with the ZF8! My status is “Order Received “, can’t wait! Week 40 build I understand. Curious as to which mode of this performance automatic ZF8 you use the most and why? Thanks! Will be soon sending my well driven and cared for M2 Competition (heavily modified with OZ wheels and side reflector deletes, LOL) to a lucky new owner before collecting (to steal the cool British term for taking delivery of) my M3C! https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/at...1&d=1691629828 https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/at...1&d=1691629828 |

I drove manual trans cars my whole life and when I bought my E92 with DCT I thought I made a mistake. But I made the decision to drive with the paddles as much as possible - 95%+ of the time, and that affirmed that I made the right decision. In every successive M since, I have followed suit.

Paddle shifters almost exclusively. An occasional tap of the gear selector if I know my shift to second will be awkward in a tight turn for the paddles. Its my weekend fun car so I drive it as such.

While the "manual mode" is and never will be as engaging as in my F82 or M2's DCT, it's still very good and I love to use the pedals. Especially now with the new exhaust. |

Ha. When M Town came to my town a few weeks ago, I got to drive the M3 Competition and at the first stoplight, I tried to waggle the gear selector back and forth like like I do in my M2C manual going into neutral.
My 28 year old son, a BMW technician, was with me and we had a good laugh! |

Well, I have a bonus question now. I was watching (another) M3C review video! What do the transmission settings 1-2-3 change?
I understand the transmission shifts more quickly, right? So does the transmission, when in Drive mode, hold the current gear longer and at higher RPMs (acceleration and deceleration) as you go up through settings 1-2-3? |

In S, it's how fast the gears actually change/aggressive the shifts are. |

Drive and comfort until the oil has reached 90°C.
Then, if a winding road is underneath, preferably uphill, I allow myself either M1 (programmed D2 and brakes on Sport) or S2 with paddles. The last one makes fun because here™ you have to be aware of a cyclist behind every curve, so you have much to do this way, and it makes fun changing speed and rpm with the paddles in these situation. Not to mention the "kind" reactions oft he brave bicyclettistas when they feel being acoustically involved in my shifting efforts, LOL.
