C8 Corvette to M4?
![]() Featured on BIMMERPOST.com For me the M4 is a all-season daily and C8 would obviously be a summer which isn't very practical, but damn it's beautiful. |

I was trying to decide on C8 or M4. I am really enjoying the M4, this is my first BMW. Thought all you BMW guys were snobs
![]() If it were a C8 Z06, I would have to pick the Z06 I think. |

C8 Z06 would be the only way to go. And that won't be happening anytime soon unless you're lucky or have plenty of money to waste on a market adjustment. Even then might be difficult.
I had a c5 Z06 back in the days. Was a good car, can't say that I miss it, but was fast as shit compared to most cars for its time. I think BMW quality is way ahead. Nice to see American made cars catching up, but not enough for me to jump back into.

2 totally different cars though.
Looks - C8 Faster - Track C8, real world M4 Sound - C8 by miles Attention - C8 Versatility - M4 Resale value - C8 If you can swing both, get both. Idk how many people cross shop between the 2 cars. They're very different from each other. One is a quick daily driver that can disguise itself with your everyday car and you can also have fun on the weekend. The other is mainly a "weekend" car that you take out when you want to show off or hit the track. |

I read where the C8 ZO6 may have a base price around $130-135,000. I had a C6 ZO6 that had a base price of around $70,000. I was seriously considering getting a C8 Corvette until I kept looking at it and it kept looking bigger and bigger the more, I looked. I also can't get 2 golf bags in the C8 where I could in the C6 and will be able to in the M4 coupe. I passed on the Vette which would have been my 5th and decided to get another BMW which will be my 7th.

I was debating between a c8, Porsche Spyder, and the m4. The Chevrolet dealers all made me mad by not giving me the time of day but they we all charging adm and I couldn't do it. They did let me sit in a used one. The m4 with extended leather felt way nicer and better put together than the c8. I wasn't able to drive either before they arrived but my G83 has not disappointed.

I can't find the article right now, but I read one in like Car & Driver that said the base price was going to be where I listed it for.

That sounds more like the article I read with a price of over $150,000 with a 3lz package. My son recently sold his C7 ZO6 that had 3lz and carbon fiber brakes, etc. and had a sticker of over $130,000, so these cars with options have been creeping up for a while. As for resale value, he bought it used for $65,000 with only 18,000 miles on it and a manual transmission (pre-Covid) and sold it 2 months ago for $85,000. At least pre-Covid, these cars were not holding their re-sale values very well. Who knows what the C8 will bring? They may do well because of the supply and demand.

I've never been a fan of the entry level corvette and the C8 is no exception. The Z06 is a different story but then you're in a completely different price bracket.
Peformance wise the entry level C8 seems to be neck and neck with the G8X (non-xDrive). The video above touches on some of that. The xDrive variant is a bit faster than the C8. The Nurburgring times C8 at 7:29.9 vs M4 at 7:30.79 (7:28.57 xDrive). The corvette to me has always been one of those cars that screams, "Look at me! Don't you think I'm cool?!!" M cars are more subtle–if you know...you know.

I had a C8 and traded it in for a Competition M4 xDrive. Here's my story:
In May 2021, I called the largest Corvette dealership in the country. I placed a refundable $1,000 deposit. I figured I had nothing to lose. I knew I was getting it for MSRP, but the catch was the wait which was projected for 10-12 months. I didn't care since I had a 2019 BMW 540i that I was leasing which ended at the end of December. Fast forward to August. I recently moved and started a new job earlier in the year and was driving 3 miles per day during the work week. A full tank of gas would last me almost 2 months. At over $650 a month in lease payments, this didn't make much sense. So I reached out to BMW dealerships asking if they would just take the car from me free and clear so I wouldn't have to make the last 4 payments. I got one dealer to bite. The catch? I had to buy a car. Screw it. I placed a deposit for the M4 Competition. I saved $2,600 in future payments AND the dealer cut me a check for $1,600. Nuts! Now I had 2 deposits with 2 dealerships. I didn't want to pull the C8 deposit until I knew I had an M4 allocation. I reached out to my dealer after a couple of weeks. Then after a month, they had no idea when I would get an allocation. They refunded my deposit. I was using my wife's car, but when the new year rolled around, she would have to go back to the office. So I used the money I would have saved from future BMW payments plus my dealer check and picked up a 2009 Lexus ES350 beater for commuting for $4,500. This was always the plan because there was no way I was leaving the C8 at the train station all day + winters were going to be rough. December rolls around, and I was finally able to place my C8 order with expected delivery in April. I picked her up as scheduled in April, and of course it blew me away. Elkhart Blue Coupe, 2LT, Mag Ride, Z51 Package, etc. The ride was compliant (thanks to mag ride), but don't expect a Lexus sedan ride on bumps. Once I broke her in, I pulled a couple of 0-60 times at 2.9 seconds. With the mid engine, she was just planted on turns. Just a blast to drive. Now the looks. I've owned some nicer cars and recently a C7 Laguna Blue Coupe, but I have never had the insane reaction like I did just driving around town. I had the car for 6 weeks and 650 miles, and during that time, I've had conversations at red lights, people waving, thumbs up, heads turning left and right and one kid yelling 'I love your car!'. Crazy. So why did I get rid of it? For all of you family guys out there, I learned an important lesson. I completely underestimated having a family of my own - wife and a 2 year old son. By that I mean I found myself driving the C8 alone. It's fine to have an escape with your ride on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, but at times I'd like to ride with someone. My wife said there was NO WAY I was going to have my son with me in the car even though the state allows him in the front of a 2 seater (I should've had this conversation with her when I placed the original deposit). Plus I can't just take my wife for a spin or on a short trip because we can't just leave the 2 year old behind. It was a Catch 22. With the market still red hot on C8's, I threw some feelers out there. I eventually needed a car on my own and tried my hand again for the M4. I was able to get a BMW Dealership to trade my C8 in and pay $18,000 more than what I paid. In addition, I saved another $6,000 on the tax break since it's considered a trade-in. Plus I should be able to sell my beater for break even after the M4 arrives. Fortunately I was on the list for only a couple of weeks until I got the allocation and paying MSRP. Now the M4 is at the port and can't get here soon enough. The C8 will be missed. The M4 may not be as exotic looking and won't grab as much attention as the C8 (that's probably a good thing). However, now that I have a family, the extra 2 seats makes a world of difference. I also won't have to worry about the hassle of maintaining an extra commuter car. Plus the M4 is still a beautiful looking car and packs a punch. For me, it was the right decision. Last edited by comebackid; 07-23-2022 at 04:38 PM.. Reason: edit |

Dozens of elderly men in the C8 around my roads. Red with shiny "chrome-ish" wheels, and driving 10 under. No exaggeration. Friends have group text whenever we see white hair/red car/10 under. It's like a drinking game.
The other dozen(s) of C8 are wild colors driven by much younger/the demographic Chevy wanted in the C8. I have no remorse passing over my several C8 allocations the past two years especially since the Z06 sound clips and pics came out. Makes the base C8 sound like a tractor. Although it's odd to think my build (2LT Z51) at that time was less than the M4CX. And then local dealers were only charging 10K over MSRP which I thought "no one will ever pay that", ha. Took my name off the Z06 mega wait list with Ciocca. No desire to get the hybrid. I'll be leaning toward EV or hybrid Porsche or BMW by then. In my opinion the Z06 stock wheel option is equally handsome as the M825. |

I think the demographic has changed a bit the past 5 years or so in regards to the corvette brand. While the average age of a corvette owner is still "older", i find myself seeing younger looking guys in corvettes the past couple of years. I don't attend actual corvette meets anymore because they're boring but whenever i do go to a car meet and there's other corvettes, the owners look young. No older than 40.
I find it hard to believe though when people say they see C8's everywhere. Maybe in texas or florida but around me, i'd be lucky to see one a month. And i drive a lot. I saw one today, which looked amazing and before that, the last one i saw was maybe 2 months ago? I can't even remember. I consider myself lucky to be in the position to get the stingray and the z06 soon. Although i'll probably see my stingray first, i think if the z06 shows up late due to any shortages, or low allocation numbers from my dealer, the stingray would definitely keep my entertained in the meantime and i still have my C7Z. I still fail to see the logic behind cross shopping between an M3/M4 and a corvette of any kind. They are 2 totally different cars. I'm lucky to have both. I think that's the way to go if you're interested in corvettes at all. They are additional toys. |

I had a refundable deposit down in early 2021 for a C8. We had a C7 and it was nice. Just nice and good, not great and fun, more of a B- vehicle. Plenty American muscle torquey, average interior, average fit and finish and the steering and suspension was like a truck. It had nice storage room under the rear hatch and sounded great.
Sold the C7 private party and after waiting for 6 months and hearing nothing from the Chevrolet dealer as to where exactly I was on the list and hearing the continual 8-12 months you should see your car arrive, we bolted and ordered a 2022 911. Yup, paid around $50K more, however in all aspects it is well worth it. I see tons of C8s in SW FL and at the end of the day, it's still a Chevrolet. I like it, but to me, it is still a B- type car. Drove one and it gave me the same feeling when I was in the C7. It looks like a dollar store Lambo that the aero fairies puked on. I'm glad we pulled the trigger on a 911 instead. Just me though and I do appreciate what the C8 brings to the table. To me, the M4 is a better all around vehicle than a C8, at least for us. We like the rear seat, the feeling it gives of a little more spaciousness, the larger trunk, and overall BMW fit, finish, and the way it just holds it's presence. There is a place for each car in everyone's garage based on their needs, perceived value, and what experience they're looking for in a vehicle. I have realized that I have outgrown my teenage and college years where I needed to hear that V8 exhaust, feel the torque and be able to throttle steer and toss the rear end out around the corners. I also don't care anymore what people thing about what I drive or what color it is. I can laugh about the old farts driving their C8s around and then make fun of the geeky Porsche 'club' that spends 2 days a week destination cruising and acting like they are the $hit (yes I am in the 'club' and have yet to join a lunch adventure with them, although I will just to say I got my $45/year out of it). Cheers! Enjoy the M4, C8, C8 Z06 or whatever you're putzing around in today! |

I'm exceptionally biased here, have never and will never find the Corvette or any American muscle attractive - so I would say M3/4 all day long. But...I think they're radically different cars, as others have also noted - which is the kind of car you want? Last edited by androidtopp; 07-24-2022 at 04:35 PM.. |
