Why no G81 M3 Touring?
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com If they have the engineering to offer a manual, why not spread it around to more offerings? Last edited by seis-speed; 10-16-2019 at 11:44 PM.. |

Because the cost of development is larger than the profit it would make in sales.

The problem is that the few people that buy them will love them, but the number is just too small.
As BMW moves to the zf8at for everything and 4wd I think that the Alpina B3 touring is a completely adequate option for everyone considering the idea of an M3 touring. Of course there is always this render of perfection. That plus M2C 6MT is all anyone ever needs in a 2 car garage.

I can never understand why they are so reluctant, yeah sure I get the low sales argument, but they already have the parts developed for the M3 saloon, other than perhaps different spring rates, and a slightly revised quarter panel, surely everything is the same as the saloon?

And then of course you have to deal with repeating emissions and safety testing for every configuration. Also factor in that you will have a higher rate of scavenging from existing M3/M4 market, and not a lot of people jumping over from their AMG wagons. So you're basically multiplying the cost of development to steal sales from your own books. There are a lot of levels to it. And people like me understand, because I love the idea of these ridiculous fast wagons. But I have no interest in actually owning one. |

That’s true, re ownership, I also like the idea of it, but when it comes to the crunch, love coupes too much. Even coming from 2 previous F80’s I find the M4 much more pleasing on the eye and feels more sporty just for having 2 doors rather than 4.

Well that's why they are losing sales to AMG and RS because both are making great estates.

This is why we have Alpina if you need a fast wagon.

Which is, for the first time ever, it is worth pointing out, using the same engine that the M counterpart will use (the S58 in this case):
https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1651460 So, for those in Europe or wherever else the B3 is available, an M3 Touring conversion just got simpler. It'll still require custom rear body work, but at least you don't have to do the engine swap. |

I use to be anti-wagon, like most of those living in the states. How things have changed. I would do unspeakable things for a M3 or M5 wagon.
Nowadays when I see an E63s, I couldn’t care less. If it’s a wagon E63s, I have my phone out trying to take a pic. |

Being originally from Scandinavia were we love wagons including me they are preferred as a one car solution. If, they are mid-size offering ample storage. Wagons pretty much obsoleted sedans when I was still living there. Not only were they more practical they were cooler than sedans. We now talk the likes of A6 Avant, V70, 5 Touring.
3-series size wagons however had much less appeal due to the inadequate total space. Nowadays with a 2+ garage I strongly prefer to have an SUV over a wagon as the gear carrier and road trip/adventure car coupled with a sportier sedan or coupe. The higher ground clearance Of an SUV make it more robust and it keeps much cleaner in crappy weather and terrain inside and out. The larger volume can absorb more moisture from wet ski gear and clothes etc. to prevent fogging up. And today you lose little in driveability in cars like our Cayenne. I still think wagons are cooler but I’ll never go back to one. The market for wagons in the M3 class I guess is today near insignificant even if we love them for their coolness factor. I’d make an exception if BMW fired up the E61 M5 production though...coolest M car ever. |
