Debunk This Front Grill Theory
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I had a question I wanted to ask about the front grill. I can’t remember exactly when but I do remember an automotive reviewer mentioning that BMW’s design of the G8x front grill was partically because of them wanting to maximize the airflow for the car, instead of them doing it from a looks perspective. Does anyone have any knowledge on this? Could this be why the oil cooler is placed underneath the car in what seems like a horrible place to be?

yes. companies have discussed changing the front bumper, but its not really possible since it will restrict needed airflow. alot of engine components would need to be rearranged.
although a caveat to this is the new M2 with the S58 does not have the pig nose. although its detuned im sure the comp/cs model will have similar hp to the g82 comp. The alpina b3 also runs an s58 with a normal 3 series grill.

Probably a little of both.

Wait, what? I thought they designed the front grill like that just to piss off car journalists.

Dirtbikerr450 Thanks for the video! I can’t recall if that was the video I was thinking of but it’s interesting when people display such distain for the grill. Most people I ask love it.
When I look at cars like the F80 or the M340i LCI, I love their look but I feel like somethings missing. It’s almost too basic and plain and I’m not into extremely aggressive looking cars myself (for my daily driver). I’m actually planning on ordering my G80 with a sunroof and car colored mirror caps/spoiler to keep a more oem/luxury look versus the aggressive track car vibe but the grill itself looks perfect.

The grill gives it presence. Some days I love it. Some days, I find it a bit obnoxious--probably same thing my wife says about me. But I don't regret.
