Stopgap car?
Did anyone consider buying another car while waiting for a M3 allocation? What did you consider?
With used cars retaining value pretty well, I don't think there'd be too much of a financial hit keeping the car for the 8-12 months and selling it once an allocation comes though. I'm looking for something dynamic with an AWD system, so I've been eyeing an Alfa Stelvio QV or a Jaguar F Pace SVR. Neither are necessarily cars I would want to keep long term, but could be fun in the short term. |

My stop gap was the RWD Comp while I waited for an XDrive to come available.
I got the 21 Comp RWD in May 2021 and the 2022 XDrive G80 in Sept.... what a stop gap car it was. I paid msrp for both and neither was an order/allocation car.

I’m actually doing this the other way round. Ordering the M3 (iomg/black) while I wait for a 911 allocation. My thinking is I want to own both in the next 5 years so “order of operations doesn’t matter”. And if I like the m3 enough maybe I hold it for a while!

Sold my 235i when I went on the waitlist for the G80. With the used market it wasn't going to be worth anymore than it was at that time. I ended up picking up a 2003 (e46) 330i in the interim in cash. Might keep it as a track car when the G80 gets here.

When did the M3 become such a "beater" car?

I bought a low mileage 2003 E55 AMG while waiting on my M3CX because Doug Demuro made a video including it in top cars under $50k that are going up in value. Knew there was no way I was going to lose money.
Just put it up for sale as my M3 should be arriving November, and I’m likely to make a few $K on it. |

It's all about how much money one has. For someone with millions of dollars, any car under 100k can be a beater.
Basically if the cost of the car happens to be a very small percentage of the individual's net worth, then it can be considered a beater car to that particular individual. But I get the sentiment, a brand new M car is too nice to be considered a "beater". |

Just pickup a 2022 Cadillac CT4 V Blackwing. 1st ever domestic car and enjoying it. I’m sure I’ll get sick of it in one year. Hopefully, I will have my G80 by then.

What about a GTI manual or something to really make your M feel amazing when you get it. Not that it's a bad car whatsoever, I've had a DSG MK6 for 10 years.

Just sold my 2021 Supra as my M4 is about to enter production. It was a great car and I intended to keep it longer, but the used car market isn't the same as it was last year.

Sold my RS3 while the market was hot a little while back. Bought a Model 3 Performance as the stopgap while waiting for my G80. One of the few cars I could get quickly at msrp.

This was my exact situation with my Audi S4 lease ending. I decided to go a different direction and bought an MK7.5 GTI.
I adore it as a daily and glad I bought it as a stopgap. |
