The franchise has always been about being ridiculous. After 2 they probably realized that being ridiculous in a campy, caricaturist way was getting played out, fast. So they evolved into a different kind of ridiculous.
Original F&F is still one of the most quotable movies of all time. It's up there with Star Wars, Spaceballs, Monty Python and Princess Bride
