The joke is that we Americans think we are the best and first at everything, which leads to us having the wrong take on history.
For example, we think that Christopher Columbus discovered America, which is why we named this country after Amerigo Vespucci, even though there is evidence of the Scandinavians being here long before Columbus was born.
None of that matters because we put men on the moon and brought them back to Earth.
Short answer: Americans have big egos and short memories.
