95% or more of the R&D is already done when the base car is done.
The G82 CSL R&D and validation can be done in a few months or even weeks if necessary. The year of 2022 fits as a launch time, given the G8X product pipeline.

Seems strange they'd release the CSL the year after main car launch and pre LCI. Nowhere to go from there for the G8x generation and not in keeping with previous special releases. But I don't know M's product launch strategy and stand to be corrected.
