Definitely not required.
But I work remotely even before the pandemic and it wasn't much more at the time I got it, I believe I had xfinity 80mbps with a cap before for not much less. This was unlimited bandwidth, must faster upload (handy for remoting into servers and transferring large files), great for gaming (even while someone else is watching netflix/etc).
Now that I am locked in at a lower price, it is a great deal even if it's more than I need.
