Go drive an F80 with 3 other people in the car and then talk about how it doesn't affect anything. It will still be faster than an E90, but not as good as with just the driver. It absolutely affects the drive qualities even if they overcome the performance deficit with better tires and more HP.

Will the average consumer care? Absolutely not because most of M cars sold will never see more than 4500 rpms other than merging on a freeway. There are badge humpers and there are drivers. The badge humpers pay for the development so we can't really complain too much.

It is pretty rare for any of these cars to truly be driven in anger any more. For those of us that do want to experience the last 20% of the performance, the weight absolutely matters. It is not just track drivers that care.
