I think the same enthusiasts (or crazies) who want a manual today, would figure out a way that it makes some sense to get a manual no matter what size of a car they need. When I bought my first BMW it was in the 1980's and I needed a bigger sedan. I bought a 733i (E23) with a 5-speed manual. My next one was an E39, also a manual. Now, years later, I drive like an old fart and my 340 has more power than I need, but I figure that my next car needs to be an M3 because that's the only one with a MT. It makes perfect sense to me.
