Decent is a relative term considering the crap 2020 has been so far, it could've been worse.
I am guessing they needed to differentiate front end to look compared to M340i, instead of just slapping M3 badges and calling it a day. Besides, BMW is known to pull this "release now, improve later during LCI" trickery for decades. So I expect no less internet uproar when it is time for LCI.
Besides, If I compare to similar cars in the price/performance category:
- Lexus RCF, Audi RS5 - both have even bigger gaping mouths and look bland
- Q50 sport- looks like from 2000s ancient, I didn't know they even made these
- ATS-V- too chintsy
- C63 Merc- reserved looks but looks too much like any other cut and paste merc
- Tesla Model 3- looks like a fat frog
