Isle of Man Green M3 & Sao Paolo Yellow M4 at the UDE - Impressions from an F80 owner

I was able to sign up last second for the UDE here in Orange County to check out the grills in person. First impression was slightly better than the photos. The size increase is hidden quite well with the aggressive body style on the G8X, and honestly I can see how the larger grills balance out the size and proportions of the car. I still don't think they were implemented well, however. The grills are frameless and inelegant compared to the CSL Homage, which created seams and contours that seemed more organic for a large grill. The CSL Homage grill is also smaller, yet still retained the classic upright kidney grill:

The interior is an improvement over the F80, I just wish the competition seats had cutouts like the carbon shell seats do. I might be one of the few who finds the blue with yellow accents absolutely stunning.

My opinion remains only slightly more optimistic, but I still come to the same conclution–I can overlook the large grill, and I think the more we see it on the road, the more it's style will grow on us, but what I cannot overlook, at least until I drive it at the limit, is the weight and size increase.

Time will tell, but on a side note I did come away with a surprisingly good impression of the M235i, which is another one of BMW's latest attempts to make the ugliest car in the market. It's downright hideous from the rear. But driving it at the limit on the auto-x, it was surprisingly nimble, predicable, and went exactly where I wanted it to go with little wrangling and just enough oversteer to make it fun. The M340i, on the other hand, is good, but not as good as the M235i. I was not only faster in the corners, but having a better time doing it in the M235i. Is it enough to convince me to get one? No. I'll be eagerly awaiting the next M2 as a track toy. Disclosure: I track two days a week on a good month, one auto-x and one circuit. The instructors asked me my experience so they were a little more forgiving when I opened up both cars and managed to clip a few cones trying to get a tight a line as possible. It was a lot of fun, but alas, there was no timing, so no bragging rights except when I would consistently catch up to the car in front of me.
