I don’t think there was ever a time when “M” was thought of as synonymous with V8s. If anything, I’d say the M division is more famous for its straight sixes, especially since that’s the engine configuration most commonly associated with bmw it’s self.
AMG is definitely associated with v8s in my mind, though that’s changing as well.
