The move to darker rims is a trend for BMW in particular because of brake dust. J.D. Power consumer survey results in the U.S. a decade ago cited brake dust as the most prevalent ‘defect’ afflicting BMWs. So in order to improve their new-car reliability standings, rather than compromising on brake pad compounds, BMW began offering vehicles with darker rims. ‘Problem’ solved!
