The way I see it, BMW is trying to force everyone who wants MT/RWD/driving pleasure to only buy M2 variants because it takes more resource to offer across M range.
In this age where character and customization are valued more than ever, this is a less than ideal decision in the hindsight of cost cutting in production and R&D.
