I too cannot understand how Doug DeMuro got this far but from listening to other people who are fans of his, I've learnt that he caters to a wider audience beyond car enthusiasts. He doesn't focus too much on raw specs or performance but rather focuses on "quirks" and features that people can relate to.
The one guy I can't stand is Scotty Kilmer. In a nutshell, he preaches not to buy a BMW/Audi/MB because of poor reliability but instead save your money and buy a 1991 Corolla that will last forever. By that logic, a bus pass is more economical.
