Because it's an age old comparison. The M3/4 has always been about 911 levels of performance with more practicality for less money. Futher, 911 and M3/4 have been close racing competitors in several categories for several decades. Even if they are not direct competitors, it is still interesting to see how they stack up. I've actually remember many comparos featuring the E46, E92 or F8X against the 911 where the M3/4 took the win.
I understand the theory due to the M3/M4 punching above its weight, but I'm referring to more serious shopping comparisons. It was more rhetorical than literal. I imagine that most who can deal with a two seater AND who can afford the Porsche.......buy the Porsche.
