Since the very beginning, as it has never been anything else than an elegant, traditional, executive sedan or 2 door coupé on steroids, and as such looks best proportioned with a set of same diameter front and rear wheels. An exotic mid-engine supercar with a very forward cabin, on the other hand, such as a Zonda, might naturally lend itself to larger diameter rear wheels which transfer more visual weight to the back. Or even the latest 911. But these not only have a better suited profile for this visual trick, the whole rear wheel is larger, not just a larger rear rim + thinner rear tire setup which looks inadequate and defeats the purpose.
It doesn't look as bad on a slender 2 door coupé such as the M4, but an executive saloon or a boxy SUV are just designed to look best with same diameter front and rear wheels.
