If I was a betting man, which I am, I'm betting on the large grilles simply due to the new 4-er having them. Can't imagine BMW spending the money to make a significantly different setup.
Could large grilles work? Not like this. Too radical. From what I'm reading (will try to link my sources) this push for HUGE grilles is due to the burgeoning Chinese market. There's a strong desire to show off the money and have people know what you're driving.
