I'm one of those folks Sadly, I'm 6'2" with long legs, so space behind me is at a premium - and I've got 2 kids now. No one could sit behind me in my E90, and my 5-year old is just about out of space behind me in my F30 now. An extra inch or two of rear legroom would be pretty sweet.

Don't forget, BMW makes the 1 and 2-series now for those who want something smaller.
1 series is a hatchback (and not avail in the US) and 2 series is a coupe. I'm just suggesting the 3 series should be their "small" sedan. I would suggest that the 5 series and 7 series are available for those that need more space.
