No, the big and tall grills are justified because that's how BMW grills started (they weren't wider than their height until the E36 was introduced in 1990), BMW wants the M cars to stand out from the mainline 3/4 Series, BMW has a history of evolving its design (especially as technology evolves). |
Except the big grilles aren't reserved for only the M line. Not sure what point you're trying to make
