Bricking them is a safety issues #1. Not to mention you own the car and have a reasonable expectation that it doesn't stop working when the manufacturer doesn't in their opinion like what you've done to it.

I mean if it was a phone and you modified your phone software can the manufacturer brick your phone whenever they please over the air because they don't like modified phones? Now you can't call 911 as punishment? That wouldn't hold up.
