You are not quite correct, it does not offer the same practicality as an X3M. The X is bigger inside, has more ground clearance, and I think more towing capacity. The M is very limited in what it can do by its small ground clearance.
But yes the handling is better on the M, and probably the ride comfort too.
Put it this way, if you had to tow a boat or a race car, would you prefer a Chevy Suburban or an X5M? Given that you have to live with it outside of towing, my choice would be clear and simple.
