But why then the badge omissions on the M models equipped with M xDrive? Might it be one of the other potential reasons I've mentioned?
Just a detail:

You're confusing Audi Quattro with quattro.

Quattro with capital Q is the famous 80s coupe.

quattro is the AWD system.
