The opinions above are all interesting to read. I drove an M8 (on the street, not track) and it's a fabulous car. I have driven my M4 on the street and on the track, and it's a fabulous car. The M4 is more comfortable, easier to get in and out of, and cost less. I also got three pedals, which you can't get on the 8.
The M8 looks better and has a nicer interior. It's also a lot more expensive. And the depreciation is staggering.
If I wanted a slushbox and the prices were the same, I'd go with the M8. As prices are now, I'd go with the M4 with no regrets.
