Going from the E34 to the E39 540 6spd was a letdown in the transmission/clutch department (but certainly an upgrade in other areas).
I have had 5 BMW manuals, including 2 M cars. My favorite was the E60 550 - with the LCI they gave the sport package cars a short shift kit that really improved it. Coming out of an E39 540 and then later going to a E60 M5 the difference was striking. Throws were shorter and uptake was smoother as well. That 540i was really the worst manual I have ever driven, even with a CDV delete. The huge torque of that M62 right off idle didn't help any.

The E90 M3 was pretty good, and my current F30 328 isn't bad. But the throws are a bit longer and the feel just a bit more vague than some other makes I have driven.

I thought the G82 I drove recently was better than most.
