Its supposed to be due to the introduction of the electronic parking brake, can't do that with the fixed calliper set up.

But yes, would have been nice to have kept it as it looks much nicer and remember it being a talking point in the F80/82 press release. Also can't imagine, rear axle wise, it's anything other than a step backwards in terms of performance. They've beefed up the front instead.
