Not so sure. People ordering the MT aren't after the fastest lap or quarter mile times. We're already down over 70lb tq compared to the rwd competition.
Not everything is about outright speed.

Said no one... the Nissan Altima is also awd now.
The only reason to get an awd automatic m3 is so you can compete against a Tesla in 0 to 60.
I was reading an article and they were interviewing one of the developers of the new M3.
"We made the M3 awd and gave it more power so some owners can have bragging rights."
"We made the M3 Pure for the enthusiast; the ones that put the driving experience at a premium."
