If I had to guess it's marketing related, the idea of being able to focus the messaging on one element at a time. BMW seems to be heavily focusing the early messaging on the availability of a manual. (Early demo drives were manual, the first demo video of the track drive was a manual). So at launch they can talk about purity of rwd, manual as focused points. along with the auto, rwd for the competition models and whatever they have done to the auto to make it perform more like a DCT (note: not starting a discussion here on pros/cons keep that to the transmission thread, but it is a fact bmw marketing will be talking about it) Rather than having to dive into xdrive and answer questions comparing the two systems back and forth on day 1.

Maybe SCOTT26 can shed some light on the delayed intro...
