I think BMW was smart to offer the manual. They are likely watching the success of Porsche with the GT3, 911R, etc. Their top performance line offered in a manual to appeal to enthusiasts and keep the buzz alive. While you lose performance you gain in involvement.

I have had 2 R8's. 1 AWD and 1 RWD.

While the RWD is more fun and involving, I will never push it to 100% for fear the rear will break loose. With the security of AWD I would push a little harder.

So that's what you lose... a little more security and performance with AWD. Depends on what is more important to you.

I will choose RWD 100% of the time for a sports car. In a family car or casual DD I'll take AWD.
