Honestly it has alot to do with your house design. A single story house with nice attic access is way easier to install cameras than a three story town house with no easy way to run wires.
The hardware is not expensive. I just bought a nice NVR system for my new offices for $500. At home I use wireless Ezviz cameras which work great. I tap USB power for the cameras from various lights around the house.
