It seems like a very strange business decision to do all the R&D on something only to then not sell it for fear of plagorisim.
One option they could consider is pre-sales. Do it at a reasonable price, offer it for 2-3 months with people paying say half upfront and half upon unlock at a pre-determined release date. They'd get thousands of takers and a heap of revenue to cover all their R&D + a tonne of profit.
