I had my car in the LA area for the last couple of months. The squealing was constant. Couple weeks ago, I drove it back home to Phoenix. Squealing is nearly gone. I heard it once and it happened right as the car came to a stop and was almost a light groan (probably brake dust). It no longer squeals when I first apply the brakes like it did before. Only difference I can attribute it to is humidity. 40-60% in the LA area and 8-20% in Phoenix.
Not scientific, but interesting why it would just about stop and nothing else changed. Taking it to the shop anyway.
By the way, I got 22 mpg on the way home with the car loaded with stuff and a rack/bike on the top. I thought that was pretty good.
