Yep, you answered your own question: power/weight.
Probably worth adding the rear tires didn't get any wider/stickier so the there are still going to be similar traction limits.

And the base M3 still has the same torque rating as the previous gen which matters a lot more off the line

Add that onto the 200lb gain and you end up balancing out the increased horsepower for the base models
