I'm in Brooklyn BTW. If the snow is that bad you will be taking it super easy and the Alpins will be fine. If it's just cold and below freezing which is most of the time in deep winter, I think the performance winters will have more time when they work better. As soon as you have a couple of slightly warm days, those studless snow tires are probably going to not perform well would be my guess.
+1. I have Alpin 5s as well, and I expect to navigate deep snow occasionally, once winter truly arrives. So far they've been performing fine in 'light' winter weather conditions akin to what you typically encounter in NYC metro area.

Tire Rack gave the Alpins good reviews on ice, and I believe you and your family will appreciate less road noise when pavement is dry or just wet (relative to more aggressive studless snow tires).
