Go (much) further back in time than the F82 .. to when BMW only offered silver (meaning all silver) rims, except for the E39 M5 and the E46/E9x M3. Most owners didn't bother cleaning their wheels properly, so they either became discolored over time or stayed charcoal from brake dust build-up.

Fast forward to the rim designs you see on 3, 5 and 7 Series sedans and X1 through X7 SAVs .. not a silver barrel to be found, and only a hint of polished silver on the rims' faces.
Most people feel the brake dust is even more of an issue on the black wheels than on the silver. Are you arguing the opposite?
