I've been winter driving in RWD ///M cars here in Canada for the last 20-years without issue. So RWD with good winter tires is very doable.
However, my wife has been driving Audis and there's no denying the superiority of AWD in the snow.
As others have said, even with AWD, winter tires are highly recommended.
