The only reason SUVs are much more popular than wagons in the US is that decades ago they got a reputation for not being "cool." It's not rational and specific to the US.

They INSIST that US buyers are not interested in station wagons (A lie disproven by MB, Audi and Volvo) and if you want a BMW with a hatch and on stilts your only option are X-Series CUVs and SUVs. agreed, and I say this as a current F97 owner.
if the G81 were coming to the US I'd drop the X3M harder than amber heard's bed-side stool.
