Production start for iconic sports car at BMW Group’s Munich plant

The new BMW M3 delivers extremely dynamic driving pleasure in everyday traffic and on the racetrack. On a single line: Entire BMW 3 Series range produced at the parent plant. Newly developed carbon bucket seats produced in-house.

This week sees the start of series production of the new BMW M3 at BMW Group Plant Munich. 35 years after the debut of the very first BMW M3, BMW M GmbH presented the latest generation of its high-performance cars in the premium mid-size segment in September: the new BMW M3 and the new BMW M4. Earlier this week, series production started at the BMW Group plant in Munich. “We are very pleased to be producing the new BMW M3 at our parent plant going forward,” commented Plant Director Robert Engelhorn. “It’s such an iconic car and has many fans among our team at the plant, me included.”

The arrival of the new BMW M3 completes the 3 Series range at the Munich plant. From the 3 Series Sedan and 3 Series Touring to the M3, including all plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel engines – all models and drive variants are made on the same line. “The integration of the M3 went absolutely smoothly. We benefitted from the vast experience gained with previous generations of BMW M vehicles,” explained Robert Engelhorn. The BMW M4 was produced in Munich until well into the spring; it has now found its new home at the Dingolfing plant. This has meant that the stand-alone assembly process for the CFRP roof of the M4 Coupe, for example, could also be adopted for the new M3. At the Munich plant’s in-house seat production where the newly developed M carbon bucket seats are manufactured, on the other hand, totally new manual workflows are being introduced. The hood and the side panels of the M3 are also handcrafted and assembled manually.

The market launch of the new BMW M3 and the BMW M4 Coupe will begin in March 2021. In addition to the stand-alone vehicle concepts of a sedan with room for five passengers and a four-seater coupe, the drive technology also offers room for individuality: Both new BMW M models are powered by a high-revving inline-six engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and with two different power delivery levels available. A unique option in the segment is that the high-performance sports cars can be equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. Other options include an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and the intelligent M xDrive all-wheel drive system as an alternative to the traditional rear-wheel drive. For the first time in the history of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 models, an all-wheel drive system will be available from summer 2021 onwards.

Isle of Man Green looks amazing in person.

Dingolfing innovations: three new BMW models from the BMW 530e Touring to the BMW M4 Coupé.
November is the start-up time at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. Today, Monday, three new vehicle models are celebrating their "premiere", i.e. their official start of series production: From the BMW 530e Touring (fuel consumption in l / 100 km (weighted combined): 2.0-1.8; CO2 emissions in g / km ( weighted combined): 46-42; power consumption in kWh / 100 km (weighted combined): 16.1-15.4) via the elegant, dynamic BMW 4 Series Convertible to the BMW M4 Coupé (fuel consumption in l / 100 km (combined) : 10.8; CO2 emissions in g / km (combined): 248) with racing genes, the spectrum of innovations extends, plus the BMW 545e xDrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 2.3 - 2.2 l / 100 km; combined power consumption: 16.3 - 15.8 kWh / 100 km; combined CO2 emissions from fuel:

"We are once again showing what we mean by" Power of Choice ". We give our customers the choice of which vehicle concept and engine they want. Our promise is always the same: typical brand driving pleasure and maximum drive efficiency" says the Dingolfing plant manager Christoph Schröder. Thanks to the flexible production structures in the plant, all three "newcomers" in Dingolfing are built on one and the same assembly line - together with other models of the BMW 3, 4, 5 and 6 series. This means that production can always respond to global customer demand and be up to date also shift between the models.

The BMW M4 Coupé and the BMW 4 Series Convertible add new additions to the BMW 4 Series family

In total, with the November novelties this year - despite the Corona-related production restrictions in spring, eight new BMW models have already been launched at the Dingolfing plant. One focus was on the models of the new BMW 4 Series. The BMW 4 Series Coupé celebrated its start of production in July and has been on sale at dealerships since October. In November, the BMW 4 Series Convertible and the BMW M4 Coupé are now adding to the BMW 4 Series family. Both models will be launched in the spring of next year and will be built in Dingolfing for the first time. In addition to its extroverted design, the BMW 4 Series Convertible is characterized by increased driving dynamics and agility. It also has a new, highly innovative fabric hood that not only saves weight and offers more luggage space, but also opens within 18 seconds and creates an elegant silhouette when closed. The BMW M4 Coupé, on the other hand, should live up to its reputation as a high-performance coupé with M-specific chassis components and options such as the carbon bucket seat and the up to 510 hp in-line six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology.

Plug-in hybrid versions of the BMW 5 Series Touring and BMW 545e xDrive Sedan and as other e-models from Dingolfing

On the other hand, the electrification of the product portfolio is progressing with the new start-ups. In addition to the previous plug-in hybrid versions of the BMW 7 Series and BMW 5 Series Sedan, a third electrified model, the BMW 5 Series Touring, will roll off the assembly line from November. This integrates the hybrid technology with almost the same luggage compartment volume.

In addition, the new BMW 545e xDrive Sedan is an additional PHEV variant with a six-cylinder in-line engine.

This means that five plug-in hybrid models will be available from the BMW 5 Series alone. The proportion of electrified vehicles in total production in Dingolfing is just under 10 percent.
