It may have been suggested by a commenter or presenter but I distinctly remember a conceptual link to "performance" in an attempt to justify the design departure.
Having the front bumper removed by a BMW engineer, this is obviously and factually no longer a viable justification.

I’m hoping there will is an episode dedicated to the aero dynamics of the car. If so there could potentially be more to the grill’s shape than just aesthetics. Personally I don’t much care why they went this grill style though. However I’m interested in the science and results from the aero, so here’s for hoping we get an episode for it.
And then another episode about the AWD tuning and results specific to the G8X
