The M4 render appears to darken/blur the lower grille section to draw your eyes to where BMW kidneys would normally be above the bumper line. The bright edge of the lip helps hide this as well as transitioning the lines of the lower grille. The bright lines on the flares help add some lightness to an otherwise chunky design.
In reality I don't think it will look like that good but it's an improvement to me.
