All of the self services places blow. I'm on the UES and like going to the guerilla car guys that set up shop Ninth Avenue from 201st Street to 207th in Inwood. One team in particular uses the 2 bucket method with decent sponges. I bring my own micro cloth towels to dry the car because I've seen their towels fall to the ground on occasion. price is $10 bucks. $15 with vacuum.
It seemed a bit dicey the first time but you can't beat the value/quality. There are probably guerilla car washes closer to you.
