Thanks for writing the article. I felt the same way about my e93. It was heavier and slower than the sedan/coupe, but that glorious V8 and high redline were even better with the top down. And it was a hard top, so best of both worlds. It was $80k loaded 10 years ago.
After owning the 4 series convertible (granted, not the M4) and now the G80, the answer IMO on which is the best is "it depends." The G80 is incredibly practical for kids, cargo, etc. I like the stiffness and less weight. $13k less for my build with the same output and drivetrain is nothing to sneeze at. 400 pounds less. Even if I didn't have the kids, I'd go with the sedan. My $0.02.

I agree. But since the Vert only comes with xDrive, if you're headed in that direction anyway, the price and weight jump aren't terrible.
As a sedan guy, I'd probably always take the four door practicality.
