The options are a lot more profitable to BMW than the base car itself. So this change with the door cards is clearly beneficial to BMW if more people buy the full leather. And the base car becomes a tad cheaper to produce with more shared door cards.
Not great for the customer unless you consider fewer people ordering extended, seeing all the cheap plastic surfaces and then regretting not going full.
